Martin Smith

Risk and Control Governance Specialist

Martin Smith is a financial services compliance risk and control governance specialist, with 20 years’ experience, including at Morgan Stanley, HBOS, the National Bank of Greece and most recently Credit Suisse, where he served as the APAC Compliance Department’s Chief of Staff and COO.

He has a demonstratable career history of delivering a risk & control-orientated, execution-driven approach to building out senior management’s end-state visions: establishing strategy, digitalisation, transformation, governance, training, oversight / reporting-based initiatives to improve general operational functionality across Coverage Compliance, Core Compliance, FCC, Reputational Risk, Regulatory Affairs, General Counsel and Sustainability in Asia Pacific and EMEA. He frequently developed materials and delivered presentations across the organisation, up to and including regional management and the Executive Board.

At Credit Suisse he was also the APAC Director for Global Sustainability & Governance Risk, taking a lead on designing frameworks and controls covering the Private and Investment Banks. He was also the lead author of the Bank’s Global Greenwashing Policy.

Martin holds a post graduate degree in Broadcast Journalism from the London College of Communication and a BSc in Psychology from the University of West London. Prior to working in finance, he served with NATO's Joint Maritime Training Staff (JMOTS) SIMPRESS team, responsible for training senior naval officers in conflict scenarios, and as a reporter / producer for CBS2 News "Special Assignment" in Los Angeles. He is the author of the Heather Foxton series of spy novels.
